| | Description | Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. Hecate originally derived from the Egyptian midwife Goddess Hekat. In Greece, Hecate was one of the many names for the original feminine trinity ruling Heaven, Earth and the Underworld. Greeks tended to emphasize her crone or underworld aspect. Hecate was called "Most lovely one", a title of the moon. She was associated with the moon in all three of her aspects. Some said she was Hecate Selene, the Moon in Heaven; Artemis the Huntress on Earth and Persephone the Destroyer in the Underworld. Sometimes she was part of the Queen of Heaven Trinity: Hebe the Virgin, Hera the Mother and Hecate the Crone. | |

Hekate Statue Mar 30, 2010 This is an elegant piece, but seems to be a more modernistic version of the original plaque designed in Greece
some two thousand years ago. The image I've uploaded is available from the Hekataia Corporation, it is 4" (10 cm) tall and
made from hand polished gypsum stone, it has I believe a more antique look and feel, and the color and tone is richer and less "commercial" looking. This item is perfect for a small altar or traveling, and comes with a black velvet pouch for secure, discreet, scratch free handling. Its really a beautiful piece, hand crafted and reasonably priced. I have two, one for my home (I use it to guard the main entrance, as was the custom in Ancient Greece) and one I keep for traveling...a real comfort when you are on the road. Five stars.

What a load of nonsense Jan 24, 2007 This review is based on Amazons rather blasphemous blurb of the product they are peddling: - get it together guys, you couldn't be further off the mark. Suggest you do your research.
1) There is no association with Egyptian Midwife Goddess Hekat. One may as well draw an equal distinction with the Egyptian word for magic - Heka
2) There was never a female trinity ruling heavan, earth, underworld. Prior to the Olympians were the titans, of which we have Hekate, most beloved of Zeus, and retained her rights over land, sky and sea.
3) Whilst there is a tenuous link with the moon (the Athenian calendar is lunar, therefore all greek gods could be said to have a link with the moon) she does NOT have three aspects. Sometimes being depicted as having three heads, but that's what you get when guardian of the crossroads, Tri-via.
4) She is not a triple goddess, so association with Persephone (who she saw out of Hades in aiding Demeter) or Selene is nothing more than a passing association. There is no historical basis of the new-age maiden mother crone silliness perpetuated so often today. Hekate was never revered in her Crone aspect by the Greeks, because she was never a crone except for Shakespearian misinformation.
Really Amazon - nice statue, but sort your act out!
